Automotive manufacturing

Recovering value from production plastics

Black plastic automotive components for recycling

The challenge

A major automotive engine manufacturer was reviewing ways to reduce its environmental impact. During the process, a group of graduates identified a small but significant waste stream: plastic caps and plugs used to protect machined components during transport. These items should have been recycled, but an investigation revealed they were instead being sent to landfill.

Black injection-moulded plastic components and production offcuts collected for recycling

Our solution

Repro Plastics worked with the team to identify the materials involved and assess possible recycling options. The caps and plugs were collected and tested to determine their polymer composition. Rather than invest in expensive sorting equipment, we developed a more practical solution.

The materials were granulated and sent to a specialist contractor capable of separating the polymers after processing. This allowed the recovered plastic to be returned to production in suitable applications, avoiding landfill entirely and helping the manufacturer achieve its environmental objectives.

The outcome

Plastic waste diverted from landfill and returned to productive use within the manufacturing supply chain.
